There are those in the world, who wait for the perfect opportunity or that once in a lifetime chance. Some play this game with the lottery, some with their families, and even some with the word of God. Those waiting for the lottery think that if they keep playing, maybe just maybe, that once in a lifetime chance, will be their luck day. Those with family think that maybe one day when the circumstances are right, they will make everything alright, not today, but someday….
Have you ever read the story of the rich young ruler? Here is a man who had that once in a lifetime opportunity. He was in the midst of God, Jesus Christ, and was able to ask Him anything. He asked the most important question of all, How do I obtain eternal life and what am I lacking? This my friends is a once in a lifetime opportunity! The question is, how did he use this opportunity? He started off good, by asking the right question, the problem came when he heard the solution to his problem. As the story is told in Matthew 19:16-22, when Jesus told him what he was lacking (his attachment to his possessions), he walk away sorrowful, for he owned many possessions.
Some may think that if they had this opportunity they would do it differently. Well I am here to say we all have the same opportunity as the rich young ruler did. We have the words of Jesus and God (2 Timothy 3:16-17), these words contain all things that deal with life and godliness (2 Peter 1:1-3), and we all have the free will to choose or reject Jesus words.
So I ask, when we read the word of God and come across something that is difficult to bear, do we walk away sorrowful because we do not want to change or do we conform our image to Christ, and die to self and live for Jesus.
This is how we follow Jesus, pick up our cross and follow Him, nothing else in this world can keep us from Him, if we do not allow it too.
If you have any questions or concerns when it comes to the word of God, please ask the right questions and respond with the correct attitude. This is your “once in a lifetime opportunity“, what will you do with it?
