From a Child’s-Eye

08 Jan

Children are wonderful gifts of God, who can teach us many principles if we allow them. This morning I would like us to begin to look at our lives from the eye of a child. What I mean by this is to live a life as if a child was always around us. I will be the first to admit, there are things I say and do, I do not want my child repeating, none of them inherently wrong but to repeat in public, may not be the best thing in the world. So my challenge for myself is to always be talking and doing things as if my daughter was around me 24/7. This can be very hard at times because I like to joke and say things to the “older” crowd to get a laugh. I am slowly but surely realizing my flaw in that way of thinking. I do not agree with the philosophy that says, “I can but my child cannot.” Now some things that is true, like driving a car and things of that nature but what I am speaking about is, I can watch this movie with such and such language, or I can say this off-color joke but if I ever hear my child doing that, they are in trouble. The most powerful way for us as parents to teach our children, is by way of example. If they know that mommy and daddy watch and say things differently when they are not around, it peaks their curiosity; and when I was a child it made me want to do and say what “adults” were doing and saying. So like them, I would watch and say things when they were not around, that I should have not been saying or watching. God has not said there are “Adult” shows, movies, and language for adults that children cannot use. Jesus asked us to become like children, this idea has many different applications but for our purpose, I think it can be used here. Let’s live our life as if our kids are always watching and imitating what we are doing, hopefully that changes what we say, think, and do; if it doesn’t then we have some changing to do in our own lives. I hope that daily we grow and mature into more of a Christ-like image, it may begin by living a life “from a child’s-eye.”
