The All Sufficieny of Scripture

Harry Potter, one of the best selling series that ever was written, does not compare to the sufficiency of Scripture. In these books, there are many characters and events that go unnoticed and forgotten, loose ends that are never discovered. The word of God is not like your average book or movie; it does not leave you with unanswered problems or questions. The Bible is from God, it is everything a Christian needs in life to be able to complete every good work that God has given us to do (2 Timothy 3:16-17). The scriptures teach, that the man of God needs nothing more than the word, which has already been revealed (Jude 3; 2 Peter 1:3).

The scriptures that we have today are from God written down by men (2 Peter 1:19-21). These men were moved by the Holy Spirit and received the word of God via revelation (1 Corinthians 2:6-14). The apostles received the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:14), and therefore we follow their pattern left for us in scripture. That is what the first century church in Acts 2:37-47 did, they continued in the apostles doctrine. Hebrews 1:2 says that God now speaks through His Son, and Jesus came and spoke nothing but what the Father told Him to speak (John 12:49). The scriptures that were written by the apostles, were given by inspiration of the Spirit, which was the mind of Christ, and that was the will of the Father.

As the Old Testament gave the Jews the commandments of God and brought them into one mind believing the same thing, so should the New Testament (Romans 15:4-6; Ephesians 4:10-16). Our “like-mindedness” needs to be according to Jesus’ teachings, which as we have seen were once delivered for us to be able to contend for the faith (Jude 3; 1 Peter 3:15). If we did not have the complete word of God than why would Peter be telling the Christians to always be ready to make a defense for everyone who asks? Our answers need to be the same as the Christians of the first century, so we cannot and do not have a different revealed word than what they had.

There is only one true gospel and altering that gospel even the slightest, is called another gospel entirely (Galatians 1:6-9). Christians need to be on the lookout for different gospels that look very similar to the true gospel but are altered slightly to be able to fit someone’s creed or beliefs. We cannot go into the Bible looking for it to support our belief or creed but we need to read and study in such a manner that the scriptures produce our beliefs. Paul is worried that the church of Galatia is going to be turned away from the true gospel for a different one entirely. How could Paul make such a statement if the gospel had not already been revealed? We know that the scriptures, were revealed and preached in Acts 2, where the church in Jerusalem could be added to the church and continue in the apostles doctrine. How could there be an apostle’s doctrine if there was nothing to follow? The scriptures give us everything pertaining to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). Unlike  the series Harry Potter, we can be confident in the Bible that we have today knowing that through God’s providence He has given us all we need, and that His word will never pass away (Matthew 24:35).
